Zeroing a rifle scope means lining up where your reticle looks with where your bullets actually land at a chosen distance. That's it. The short version: bore-sight to get roughly on paper, confirm a near-zero at 25 yards, then move out to your real zero distance (usually 100 yards), shoot small groups, and adjust the turrets until your point of impact sits on your point of aim. The rule that keeps it simple every time: move the crosshair toward the bullet holes.

I've been building, coating, and running precision rifles for over 25 years, and I teach people to shoot at distance for a living. A clean zero is step one of everything that follows. Get it right and the rest of long-range shooting is learnable. Get it wrong and every number you build on top of it is a lie. This isn't hard work; it's careful work, and anyone can do it in an hour. Let me walk you through how I zero a scope, the mistakes I see on the line every week, and what you do once your zero is confirmed.

What zeroing actually is, and picking your distance

When you sight in a rifle scope, you're not changing where the barrel points. You're changing where the reticle looks so it agrees with where the barrel already sends the bullet at one distance. Your line of sight is straight; the bullet's path is a curve that crosses it. Zeroing sets where those two meet.

That meeting point is your zero distance, and you get to choose it. The most common choice is a 100-yard zero, and it's what I recommend for most rifles. It's far enough to be meaningful, close enough to shoot precisely, and it's the distance nearly every ballistic chart and DOPE card is built around. If you're going to keep data for distance work, a 100-yard zero is the clean starting line for building your rifle's DOPE.

What about the alternatives? A 25-yard near-zero is a tool, not usually a final zero; the bullet crosses your line of sight on the way up at roughly 25 yards, so getting centered there puts you close at 100. Some shooters run a 50-yard or 200-yard zero to flatten point-blank range, which has merit for hunting rigs. But for a precision rifle you intend to dial, keep it simple: zero at 100, commit to it, and confirm it.

How to zero a rifle scope

Here's the exact sequence I run, start to finish. Follow it in order and you'll burn very little ammo.

Step 1: Gather your gear and build a stable rest

You need your rifle, the load you actually intend to shoot (not the cheapest box on the shelf), any adjustment tool your turrets need, and targets with a clear aiming point. Most important is the rest. Bags front and rear, a bipod with a rear bag, or a solid bench; the goal is to take your body out of the equation. A wobbly rest produces a wobbly zero, and you'll spend the day chasing your own movement instead of the rifle's.

Step 2: Bore-sight to get roughly on paper

Bore-sighting gets the reticle close before you fire a shot. On a bolt-action, pull the bolt, set the rifle rock-steady, and look straight through the bore at a target 25 to 100 yards out. Center the target in the bore, then, without moving the rifle, adjust the turrets until the reticle sits on that same target. On an AR, remove the bolt carrier group so you can sight down the upper. No look-through option? A laser bore-sighter works too. You're not aiming for perfect, just for "on paper."

Step 3: Set up at 25 yards and get on paper

Move to 25 yards. At that distance even a rough bore-sight should land you on the target, which is the whole point of starting here: confirm you're on paper without wasting rounds at distance. Settle into your rest, get a clean sight picture, and fire one careful shot. Find the hole. If it's on the paper, good. If it isn't, your bore-sight was off; make a big correction toward where you were aiming and try again.

Step 4: Shoot a 3-shot group and adjust to point of aim

Now fire a group of three at 25 yards, aiming at the same spot each time. Look at the center of that group, not any single hole. Adjust the turrets to move that center to your point of aim, remembering the rule: move the crosshair toward the holes. At 25 yards your clicks move impact only about a quarter as much as at 100, so don't panic if it takes a fair number of clicks. Once the group sits on your aim point, you have a solid near-zero and you're ready to move out.

Step 5: Move to 100 yards

Hang a fresh target at 100 yards. Why move out instead of calling 25 good enough? Because 25 yards hides error; small aiming differences get magnified over the next 75 yards, and 100 is where you actually want the rifle confirmed. Settle back into the same rest and hold.

Step 6: Shoot a group, calculate your clicks, and adjust

Fire a careful 3-shot group at the bull. Measure how far the center is from your point of aim, both up/down and left/right. Now do the math against your turret value. Say you run a 1/4-MOA scope and your group lands 2 inches low and 1 inch right at 100 yards. One MOA is about 1 inch at 100 yards, so 2 inches low is about 2 MOA, and at 1/4 MOA per click that's 8 clicks up. The 1 inch right is about 1 MOA, or 4 clicks left. Dial 8 up and 4 left, moving the crosshair toward where the holes were. On a MIL scope each 0.1-MIL click is about 0.36 inch at 100 yards; same logic, different units. Step 7: Confirm with a final group

Adjustments made, fire one more 3-shot group at a clean aiming point. The center should now sit on your point of aim. If it's dead on, you're zeroed. If it's slightly off, repeat the measure-and-adjust process; it usually takes one small refinement. Once a group lands where the reticle looks, note the date and conditions. That confirmed zero anchors everything you'll build at distance.

Common zeroing mistakes

Most bad zeros aren't the rifle's fault. They're process errors, and the same handful show up over and over.

The biggest is chasing single shots. You fire one round, it lands left, you crank right, fire again, it lands high, you chase it. You're adjusting for your own wobble, not the rifle's point of impact. Always read a group of at least three and adjust off its center.

Canting the rifle is next; if the scope isn't level, your reticle is tilted, and that throws shots off, worse the farther you shoot. Use a level and keep the vertical crosshair true.

A bad rest ruins everything upstream of it. If your support is soft or inconsistent, your groups open up and you can't tell zero error from shooter error. And don't forget parallax: if your scope has a parallax adjustment, set it for your zero distance so the reticle doesn't float against the target when your head shifts. A steady rest and a repeatable position fix most zeroing problems, and that repeatable position is exactly what natural point of aim gives you.

Understanding your turret clicks

You can't zero efficiently if you don't know what one click does. Every turret is marked in an angular unit, and the two you'll meet are MOA and MIL. With a standard 1/4-MOA turret, one click moves impact about 1/4 inch at 100 yards, so four clicks moves it about an inch. With a 0.1-MIL turret, one click moves impact about 0.36 inch at 100 yards.

Here's the part people miss: those values scale with distance. That 1/4 inch per click at 100 yards is about 1/8 inch at 50 and about 1/2 inch at 200. That's why your 25-yard adjustments feel sluggish. Knowing your unit cold lets you convert "2 inches low" into clicks without guessing. What to do after you zero

A confirmed zero isn't the finish line; it's the starting block. With groups landing on point of aim at 100 yards, you have a known reference, and now you can learn what the bullet does past it. This is where DOPE begins: you shoot at known distances, record the elevation it takes to hit at 200, 300, 400 and beyond, and build a verified record of your trajectory. Zero is the first line of that record.

For hunters, that progression is everything; a solid zero plus confirmed data is what lets you take an honest, ethical shot instead of hoping. The path runs straight from this zero into long-range hunting. Zero first, build the data, then earn the distance. Skip steps and you're guessing at a living animal, which I won't teach.
